Savvy Shopping Workshops
The Northern Membership & Community Council has just completed three separate workshops in association with Mencap. Participants took part in workshops in Beeston, Clifton - Farnborough Road and South Church Drive.
The Savvy Challenge starts getting everyone together and this time we used the community space with the Youth Centre in Beeston and the Church in Clifton to do some pre-work prior to going into store. This involves looking at what is 5 aday, portion sizes, labelling and what we do with waste. The participants then had to talk about what they would buy for 4 adults on £20 for breakfast, lunch and evening meal. We also had some fun with the wheel of fruit and general laughter and excitement. They all came under budget, which was also a bonus.
When we arrived at the stores they were put into groups with their own trolley to find the food to look at prices, anything reduced and also they were not allowed any red dots on products and their basket had to look colourful with lots of fruit and vegetables. The participants had a great time but as always scanning the products is the most enjoyable part and they were all brilliant. They left with more knowledge about food but most of all with greater confidence and knowing what to look for when shopping. It is a pleasure working with Mencap who do amazing work to support these young people to increasing their pesonal skills and giving them opportunties to shine.
