Wonderfully Made Kitchen
Wonderfully Made is an organisation based in North Birmingham that seeks to help adults with a learning disability to lead more fulfilling and independent lives. Their mission is to create an inclusive and energised community where everyone feels welcome, loved and supported
One of the sessions that they run is the Wonderfully Made Kitchen. This is a weekly kitchen / café training activity for adults with learning disabilities, which helps participants thrive- one meal at a time! The food is fresh, healthy and good value for money and the café is a friendly inclusive space.
Participants build confidence in the kitchen by learning about food hygiene, preparation, cooking and serving in a safe, fun and hands on environment. After serving is done, they enjoy sharing a meal with each other as they taste their creations.
I went to see (and taste!) for myself. I was greeted at the door and made to feel very welcome. The menu consists of one meat and one vegetarian dish which change each week, and spaces are pre-booked. I think this is really important to ensure there is no food waste, which aligns with Central Co op values. On the day I went there was a Spanish theme to the meals and a choice of either chicken or halloumi one pot stew with peppers, onions, butter beans, tomatoes and paprika served with rice. I opted for the halloumi version which was delicious!

Funding by Central Co op helped Wonderfully Made Kitchen buy ingredients, pay for session leaders and room hire and expand their reach by adding recipes and photos to their website.
