The Culture of Dying Matters

The Culture of Dying Matters

This week is Dying Matters Awareness Week (5th-11th of May 2025). It's a time when people across the UK come together to talk about death, dying and grief. The theme this year is "The Culture of Dying Matters", focusing on how different communities experience and talk about death.

Why should we talk about death?

Death is something that affects everyone, but many of us find it hard to talk about. We might feel scared, uncomfortable or unsure of what to say. However, having open conversations about death can help us:

  • Understand each other better: Different cultures have unique ways of dealing with death. Learning about these can bring us closer together.
  • Prepare for the future: Talking about our wishes can make things easier for our loved ones when the time comes.
  • Support those who are grieving: Sharing our feelings can help us cope with loss and offer comfort to others.

How can you get involved?

Start a conversation: Talk to your family or friends about your thoughts and feelings on death.

Attend events: Many communities are hosting events like talks, workshops and coffee mornings to explore the topic.

Share your story: If you feel comfortable, sharing your experiences can help others feel less alone.

Remember, it's okay to feel uneasy about these conversations. But by talking openly, we can support each other and make dealing with death a bit less daunting. For more information and resources, visit the Dying Matters website.
