This Fairtrade Fortnight, we're celebrating over 30 years of our committment and how we can all improve lives through the simple choices we make every day.
Now, more than ever, it's important that we work together to support people around the world who grow, produce and supply the products that improve our lives.
Much like Cooperatives, Fairtrade isn't just a label.
It's a movement.
From tea, coffee and flowers to chocolate, bananas and wine, you’ll find plenty to choose from and will know that you’re securing a fair price for the global farmers who grow the products you love.
Here's just a few of the Fairtrade products you can find in OurCoop Food stores. Choose them and you’ll make a meaningful difference.
- Fairtrade Tea
Nothing beats a good cuppa. And by good, we mean one that's made using Fairtrade tea that helps improve communities in Kenya and Malawi. It couldn't be easier, as all our own-brand tea has been Fairtrade for over 10 years, with every brew made helping support tens of thousands of tea smallholders, workers and their communities.
- Fairtrade Coffee
We’re improving lives by supporting smallholder resilience and livelihoods in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. We switched our entire own-brand coffee range to Fairtrade back in 2003 when prices were at a 30-year low and farmers were struggling to afford to grow their coffee and we have continued this commitment to this day.
- Fairtrade Wine
We're very proud to be the world's leading retailer when it comes to Fairtrade wine. This started back in 2001 when we became the first retailer to launch an own-brand Fairtrade wine. 14 years later, we were named the largest Fairtrade wine seller in the world. In 2022 we announced that all South African wine, across branded and own label, is now Fairtrade, another industry first.
- Fairtrade Flowers
Did you know that we were the first retailer to only use 100% Fairtrade roses when sourced from Africa? We were also the first to sign up to the new International Fairtrade Sourcing Ingredients model for flowers. This means you can double-check on the pack to be sure your blooms have been sourced responsibly.
- Fairtrade Bananas
In 2000, we were the first retailer to stock fairtrade bananas. Then in 2012, we switched all our bananas to Fairtrade and launched our unique banana sourcing model committing to 100% supply from banana co-operatives with at least 50% sourced from smallholders. But that wasn't enough, so in 2018, we decided that whenever we use bananas as an ingredient, Fairtrade producers benefit from it.
- Fairtrade Charcoal
Our Unique partnership with Traidcraft means we support burners and workers in Namibia with our Fairtrade charcoal and BBQ set sales.
- Fairtrade Cocoa
We were the first UK retailer to source all our cocoa on Fairtrade terms and launched the world's first and only own-brand 100% Fairtrade chocolate range. Every spoonful of the cocoa we use helps provide around £450,000 a year in premiums for farmers across West Africa and Central America.
- Fairtrade Sugar
Back in 2004, we became the first retailer to start selling Fairtrade sugar. Now it's the only type we have on our shelves, following a promise we made to support Belize smallholder associations in improving their social, economic and environmental conditions. This has been achieved in collaboration with Tate & Lyle Sugars.
But it doesn’t stop there. Through the impact that responsible and ethical trade brings, the materials used in the Fairphones we sell, the range of coffins we provide through our Funeral business, and even the care we take in our travel business to support local communities and promote responsible tourism, we’re making a difference wherever and whenever we can.
In Mobile
We are the UK’s number 1 provider of the socially responsible, environmentally sustainable Android smartphone, Fairphone, designed to be self-repairable.
In 2016, Fairphone was the first electronics company to integrate Fairtrade gold into its supply chain and also the first to pilot Fair mined with the Alliance for Responsible Mining in 2022.
In 2021, Fairphone co-founded the Fair Cobalt Alliance, to improve the livelihoods and working conditions of cobalt mining communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In Energy
Our community energy tariff is unique in the UK, powered by 100% community-run renewable energy, bought from more than 250 community power projects across the UK, and at the same price as the standard fixed tariff.
In Broadband
All of our plans are 100% carbon neutral through tree planting via our partnership with Ecologi, our climate impact partner heloing us to to reduce our climate impact across all our Broadband and Mobile packages. You can reduce your carbon footprint simply by choosing us.
Ecologi funds carbon prevention and reduction projects that help aid the development of new renewables, introduce new low-carbon practices and improve sustainability all over the world.
In Funeral
We offer a range of eco-conscious, natural alternative coffins including Fairtrade hand-woven pandanus, bamboo, and banana leaf as part of our sustainable funeral options. We also plant a tree for every funeral in our care, so caring for our planet too.
In Travel
Our travel business provides ‘flight-free’ travel options to help limit people’s airmiles and protect our planet, as well as supporting fairer tourism by donating £1 per passenger to our charity partner Go Beyond, helping to provide life-changing breaks for children facing challenging circumstances.
We're also ensuring travel doesn’t cost the Earth through our partnership with Ecologi where we plant one tree for every Co-op holidays passenger, supporting global reforestation and verified climate projects. Together we've already helped to protect rainforests, restore peatlands, increase biodiversity and delivered sustainable green energy initiatives.
In Early Years
We believe that every child has the power to make a positive difference in both their local and global communities. This is why we encourage children to become socially aware of how their actions can change the world around them for the future.
From planting seeds in our Eco-schools’ gardens to learning life skills with Mini Medics, we make social responsibility and safety part of everyday learning in our Little Pioneers settings.
