A great start to the New Year with Mind your Money workshops

Our Mind your Money board game workshops are always fun and informative.

Whether presenting in a SEND College or in an Academy, the students learn through planning a board game. The game is based on being paid a wage from working in one of our stores and then using that wage, given in paper money, to understand a number of subject matters from saving, NI, credit cards, pensions, tax codes and much more.

The game also has scenarios cards which can be receiving money for your birthday to paying out on general things that happen in life. These include going over your data on your phone, paying for gym membership, misuse of a gambling, learning about the Co-operative and also Credit Unionsw. The game is to prepare the students for life after college.

The players also land on things like rent, utilities and food bills which have to be paid as they play and they are relieved when they land on payday!

It is a great way to showcase how adult life can be challenging and how their own parents must juggle payments and meet the demands of their children.

The workshop is to assist students to prepare for life after College and give them some idea of what a wage slip looks like and what is paid and to explain how tax and national insurance works and in particular tax codes to ensure they benefit from their money. We also discuss ways in which the students save, spend and gain an insight into their perceptions and how they think about money and how they are preparing for the future.

In Scunthorpe our MCC Member, Ian also supports with his knowledge as a former bank manager, to assist students to understand the history of money and how it started from bartering and exchanging goods to making coins to the introduction of banks. As we seem to becoming a cashless society the workshop is aimed at understanding how we use our money and to see how simple clicks at a till can soon have an impact on our disposable income.

Thanks to all the students who have taken part in our workshops as i know from their laughter and discussion that they really enjoy the interactive session.
