At Central Co-op, diversity is truly celebrated, and we’re proud to mark Neurodiversity Celebration Week from 18th to 24th of March, and to contribute to the movement that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding neurological differences.

Neurodiversity encompasses the amazing spectrum of neurological variations that exist among individuals. It acknowledges that each of us processes information, communicates and interacts with the world in unique ways, depending on how our brains are wired. With approximately 15-20% of the population likely to have a neurological difference, it's evident that neurodiversity is not just an abstract concept but a lived reality for many.

We recently announced that we’ll be soon be launching  five inclusion networks across our society, including a Disability one, These colleague-led groups will play a pivotal role in making Central Co-op a more welcoming and supportive place to work.

The launch of our Disability Inclusion Network signifies our dedication to creating a Society where opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of neurological differences. Through these networks, colleagues will have the platform to share their experiences, identify challenges and collaborate on initiatives to drive positive change within our Society.

Neurodiversity encompasses a wide range of hidden neurological conditions, and many of the challenges neurodivergent individuals face stem from environmental factors and systemic barriers. To support our colleagues in understanding and embracing neurodiversity, we've encouraged colleagues to participate in online workshop modules and read our Neurodiversity Awareness Guide. These resources aim to educate our colleagues on what neurodiversity is, how to support neurodivergent colleagues and provide practical guidance for navigating workplace scenarios.

At Central Co-op, we're committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging for all. Increasing our D&I data is our best way to gain insight into how inclusive we are. Our current disclosure rate for disability is 50%, and we’re committed to increasing this to 75% or more before the end of 2025. To make it easier for colleagues to tell us their data, we’ve recently trialled using an online survey which colleagues can access using a QR code.

Wondering how you can support neurodivergent colleagues and peers?

Ask: Check in regularly with your colleagues, both in and out of the workplace. If someone discloses their neurodiversity to you, ask how you can best support them.

Listen: Understand that individuals with neurodiversity may have unique needs and preferences. Offer assistance and accommodations where possible, such as providing clear instructions or helping with tasks like filling out forms.

Learn: Educate yourself about the traits and characteristics of different neurodivergent conditions. There are plenty of online resources available that can help you gain a deeper understanding and empathy for neurodiversity.
