Celebrating the longetivy of membership.
The Northern Membership & Community Council held its traditional Senior Members' Gathering with members who have been members of the former Derby Co-operative Society for over 50 years. The event was established in 1912 by the former General Manager, Emmanual Merchant as he wanted to reward strong and committed members of the former Derby Co-operative Society. The tradition was for a "sumptuous repast" followed by a concert.
Our President, Elaine Dean, has carried on this tradition for many years and has invited many inspiring speakers to come along. This year we welcomed Catherine Atkinson, MP for Derby North where she gave greetings on behalf of the City. She referred to the partnership around safer colleagues, safer communities, the promotion of co-operatives and the importance of celebrating the UN Year of Co-operatives. We also had our Chief Executive Officer, Debbie Robinson and Society Secrertary, Andy Seddon in attendance, along with Philip Fee, Chair of the Northern MCC.
The format of the event starts with the traditonal Co-operative Hymn - These things shall be, then society greetings by the President following by grace. The members are then able to enjoy their meal and meet up with friends and former colleagues. Also, in attendance are representatives from the Board, MCC and both the retail and funeral business.
It was also a privilege to present flowers to members who had celebrated major Birthdays including a joint 80th and a forthcoming 100th. Members attending were also in their 90's so everyone enjoyed celebrating their special Birthdays.
Entertainment this year was provided by the Elderly Brothers where members enjoyed the 60s music and joined in with the dancing and ended with everyone taking part in Auld Lang Syne.
The event is a lovely way to clebrate and bring members together. If you know of anyone who has served in the Derby area between 40-50 years, we would love to know to ensure you do not miss anyone out.
